One of the main concerns I consider after an accident like this is just whether or not authorities jumped to conclusions. With young drivers, folks are sometimes to hasty to throw blame around before they know the whole story. Maybe authorities have been thorough enough behind the scenes to avoid that pitfall, but it’s often worth asking some key questions to gauge the sort of effort they’re making.

First, are authorities conducting a comprehensive investigation with the necessary experience and tools? It’s vital to analyze any crash scene carefully, and this often includes documenting vehicle positions, examining any physical evidence like skid marks or debris, and considering road conditions. Without the right equipment or training, subtle details can easily slip through the cracks. Since not every crash is handled by a dedicate team of crash investigators, accidents may sometimes be left in the hands of officers who aren’t adequately prepared to handle such challenging investigations.

Second, has anyone looked into the possibility of a vehicle defect contributing to the crash? Issues such as brake malfunctions, steering failures, or tire blowouts could cause a loss of control drivers can’t always avoid. Furthermore, if seatbelts or airbags failed to function as intended, injuries could be far more severe than they might have been otherwise. This can take whole crash reconstruction labs to properly investigate, and this can be made more challenging if authorities let wreck yards or insurance companies damage delicate evidence.

Lastly, are investigators preserving and reviewing all electronic data that could clarify what happened? Vehicles’ Engine Control Modules (ECMs) record critical information like speed, braking, and steering inputs in the moments leading up to a collision. Beyond that, cellphone activity, GPS data, and video footage from tollway cameras or nearby businesses could provide invaluable insights into the circumstances of the crash. Promptly securing this evidence is crucial to ensure nothing is lost.

In my experience, authorities can sometimes provide satisfactory to answers to these questions, helping to ensure victims and families know their accident is in the right hands. More often than people may realize, though, authorities leave doubts and concerns that show the crash would be better off in the hands of independent accident reconstructionists. The sooner those steps are taken, the sooner investigators can get to work bring the facts to light.
