Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

These are obviously very serious allegations, but it’s important people keep in mind that charging a driver is not always the end of the story. I’ve been doing this job for over 30 years now. One thing I’ve learned is that victims and families don’t just want some “bad guy” to blame. They want to see accountability done for their suffering.

Sometimes, that means just having thorough reports on the crash that leave no stone unturned. Sometimes, a reckless driver was drunk from being unlawfully over-served by a bar, and that bar also needs to be held accountable for breaking the law. And other times, there are issues with a victim’s vehicle that made an otherwise survivable crash turn deadly.

Ultimately, it’s up to the evidence to say. Getting that evidence typically means going beyond the surface rather than settling for an easy explanation. Hopefully, steps are being taken here to ensure investigations are thorough enough that the victim’s loved ones know they’re getting the whole story.
