At this time, no further information is available, though some may not think there’s more to this story simply because it’s a rear-end collision. In reality, there are many complex factors worth looking into here, and I can’t help wondering if authorities were up to the task.

One example is that an 18-wheeler parked along the interstate isn’t necessarily safe. In fact, there are federal guidelines for how to do so, including how truck drivers are supposed to put out markings to make sure the obstruction is visible. On top of that, some drivers stop for unacceptable reasons. Running out of gas, checking GPS, sleeping, maintenance issues resulting from neglected repairs—these can all be avoided, unlike something sudden like a medical emergency. So if the truck driver here stopped for bad reasons or didn’t do so safely, that could have played a role in the crash.

Another possible factor to consider is the victim being in a Tesla. The company has made headlines due to many concerns with certain features, such as its automated driving and crash avoidance. Maybe nothing like that contributed to this accident, but it isn’t the sort of thing a typical police investigation uncovers. A defect usually only comes to light after thorough independent investigations from experienced accident reconstructionists.

This is all essentially to say that there could be all kinds of factors involved here that still need to be ruled out. Maybe authorities already took those steps behind the scenes, but that’s not usually how things go. More likely than not, making sure the family has no unanswered questions or doubts would require more thorough independent investigations. Whether or not that would reveal anything unusual here remains to be seen.
