Accident Report
February 26, 2026, Kermit Celestine and Joel Lawless were killed due to a single-car accident shortly after 4:45 p.m. along Lockwood Drive.
According to authorities, 62-year-old Kermit Celestine and 51-year-old Joes Latisha Lawless were traveling in a northbound Dodge Challenger on Lockwood Drive in the vicinity between the Harvey Wilson Drive intersection and the Clinton Drive intersection when the accident took place.
Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, the Challenger failed to safely maintain control. It was consequently involved in a single-vehicle collision in which it apparently crashed into a tree. Both occupants were pronounced dead at the scene.
Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
How Did This Accident Occur?
I have to say, I hope investigators in charge of looking into the cause of this accident are not content with simply filling in the blank with “driver error” and moving on. There are so many things that might have led to this outcome, and the loved ones of the victims deserve to know what they were. Two people were killed because the Challenger did not “maintain control”. After so many years looking into accidents like this one, I can’t help but to ask, “what was the cause of the loss of control?” There has to be a reason, and it could be almost anything; a tire blowout, a steering column malfunction, brake failure, etc. Feel free to add to that list through a comment. However, there is one way for all these things to be ruled out: vehicle inspection.
Unfortunately, in-depth vehicle inspections are not routinely done in car accident investigations. Someone needs to go out of their way in order to make sure it happens. In a perfect world, that person would be the investigator assigned to the case. However, it might have to be someone pushing for an outside investigation, in the long run. Either way, for the sake of clarity and closure, the loved ones left behind by the two people who lost their lives in this wreck deserve to know what actually caused the accident in the first place.
