According to authorities, the Cadillac driver may have been under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. If intoxication was a factor here, the path forward could be significantly challenging depending on exactly which intoxicants were involved. Folks tend to think intoxicated is intoxicated, and that’s that. But alcohol can present more significant legal hurdles due to the fact alcohol providers are often complicit in serious wrecks like this.

In short, a lot of drunk driving wrecks involve people who were illegally over-served by a bar or similar establishment. That can open those alcohol providers to civil lawsuits, criminal investigations, fines, and even revoking of their liquor license. Authorities aren’t always motivated to extend their investigations beyond the intoxicated driver, though, so that possible situation tends to put a heavier burden on victims and families than crashes involving drugs.

That’s why it can be so frustrating when authorities put all of their focus on individuals involved in the crash itself. Obviously, an intoxicated driver deserves to face appropriate consequences. But if there was an accomplice, they need to be held accountable, too. I would hope to see authorities here investigate that possibility without being pressured by the victims and families affected. Frankly, though, it usually takes outside influence to dig up details beyond the scope of a typical police investigation.
