Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When a crash like this occurs, it’s easy to jump to conclusions about fault or cause. However, accidents involving motorcycles and large trucks often raise complex questions that require thorough investigation to fully understand what happened and why.

How does a truck making a right turn from the left lane come to intersect with a motorcycle in the right lane? Did the truck driver properly signal their intentions and check for approaching vehicles before attempting such a maneuver? If not, was it a failure of attention, inadequate training, or perhaps pressure to meet a tight delivery schedule? Additionally, did the motorcyclist have sufficient time and space to react to the truck’s unexpected movement? These are critical questions investigators must address to establish a clear picture of what led to this fatal collision.

The truck’s operation and condition also demand scrutiny. Trucks making wide turns often rely on clear sightlines and working safety equipment to monitor surrounding traffic. Was the truck properly maintained to ensure mirrors or cameras were functional? Did the driver rely on safety features like blind-spot detection, and if so, were they operational at the time? Even minor deficiencies in equipment can have major consequences, especially for motorcyclists who are more vulnerable on the road.

It’s equally important to evaluate the trucking company’s role in this crash. Companies bear significant responsibility for ensuring their vehicles are safe and their drivers are adequately trained to navigate challenging maneuvers like wide turns. Did the driver receive sufficient training to handle turning safely on a busy roadway? Was the company pressuring the driver to prioritize speed over caution, potentially leading to unsafe driving practices? Investigating these factors could reveal whether the company shares responsibility for what happened.

Ultimately, the goal is to uncover the truth and provide answers to those affected by the accident. Even if it requires conducting an independent investigation to obtain critical evidence, it’s essential to examine every factor to ensure those impacted by the incident receive the clarity and closure they deserve.
