Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When it comes to single-vehicle accidents, it would surprise folks how often authorities end up moving on without getting the whole story. Sometimes, they’re seen as a low priority, so authorities move on too soon. Other times, the crash may involve factors authorities aren’t equipped or trained to investigate properly. And I’ve even had cases where authorities were so quick to blame someone that they missed crucial details that required more thorough independent investigations. That’s why it’s important in these situations to know what exactly authorities have looked into and whether or not they could be missing something.
What were road conditions like? Did a tire blow out? Did the vehicle have any defects? Did seatbelts and airbags function properly? Was a driver unlawfully over-served by an alcohol provider? Does this stretch of road lack proper signage or lighting? Do a lot of accidents happen on this roadway? Was there another driver involved who left the scene?
Sometimes, authorities can provide clear answers which show their investigations were thorough and handled properly. Other times, their efforts come up short, and families can decide if their situation needs a second set of eyes to pick up where authorities left off. It’s not clear right now how efforts were with this crash, but I have yet to see evidence that would make me take the preliminary details at face value without there being a more thorough independent investigation.
