Joplin, MO — January 7, 2025, two people were injured in a hit-and-run truck accident at approximately 4:45 p.m. along Interstate Highway 44.
According to authorities, the accident took place on I.H. 44 in the vicinity of the exit for Hearnes Boulevard.

The cause of the accident remains unclear. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, a passenger vehicle was rear-ended by an 18-wheeler. The impact apparently caused the passenger vehicle to veer to the side, crashing into a barrier before coming to a stop.
Two of the people who had been in the passenger vehicle sustained injuries of unknown severity, according to reports; they were transported to a local medical facility by EMS in order to receive necessary treatment. The rear-ending truck allegedly fled the scene, the person(s) inside failing to stop and render aid of any sort to the victims. Additional details pertaining to this incident—including the identities of the victims—are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When crashes like this occur, people often focus solely on the immediate collision, assuming it was a simple mistake or unavoidable circumstance. However, in my experience handling commercial vehicle accident cases, incidents like a hit-and-run involving an 18-wheeler typically involve deeper and more concerning factors. Understanding this accident will require not just identifying the fleeing truck but also examining the broader context that allowed such a reckless act to take place.
A central question here is why the truck fled the scene. Was the driver knowingly avoiding responsibility because they feared legal or professional consequences? It’s not uncommon for hit-and-run drivers to have outstanding violations, such as an expired commercial driver’s license or hours-of-service violations that could reveal driver fatigue. Alternatively, did the driver leave the scene because they were unaware a collision had occurred? While less likely, this possibility raises concerns about the driver’s attentiveness or whether mechanical issues like faulty mirrors or rear cameras may have played a role.
Attention must also turn to the trucking company responsible for the vehicle. Was the truck’s operation compliant with all necessary safety and regulatory standards? Companies have a duty to properly vet their drivers and ensure they are fit for the job. If the driver was poorly trained, had a history of reckless behavior, or was operating under tight and unrealistic deadlines, the company may share accountability. Investigating the company’s hiring practices, maintenance records, and enforcement of safety protocols will be crucial to determining the root causes of this event.
Additionally, the truck itself is another potential factor. Were all its safety systems, such as brake lights, reflectors, and warning signals, functioning correctly? An improperly maintained truck can reduce the driver’s awareness of surrounding vehicles and exacerbate an already hazardous situation. When a hit-and-run accident involves a commercial vehicle, it may seem at first like finding the responsible party is an impossible task. However, tracking down fleeing vehicles is more common than many people realize. Law enforcement and private investigators often use a combination of witness statements, surveillance footage, and forensic evidence to identify and locate hit-and-run vehicles. Highways like Interstate 44 are often equipped with traffic cameras or surrounded by businesses with security systems that can provide critical footage of the vehicle in question.
Finally, commercial trucks are required to display identifying markers, such as USDOT numbers, company names, or logos. Even a partial description of the truck can narrow down potential suspects when paired with databases that track licensed carriers operating in the area. Physical evidence like paint transfer or tire marks can also play a key role in connecting a specific truck to the accident. Moreover, modern technology, such as GPS tracking systems often installed in commercial vehicles, can provide timestamps and location data that further aid in identifying and verifying the involvement of a specific truck.
Successfully identifying the truck and driver is essential to hold them accountable. These efforts can be time-intensive, but they are often worth the investment to ensure those impacted are not left without answers. Ultimately, the goal is to uncover the truth and provide answers to those affected by the crash. Even if it requires conducting an independent investigation to obtain critical evidence, it’s essential to examine every factor to ensure those impacted by the incident receive the clarity and closure they deserve.
