Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
After a deadly single-vehicle crash like this one, it’s easy for people to jump to conclusions. Unfortunately, even authorities do this. To ensure the full truth comes out, investigators should be able to answer these three key questions:
- Did authorities conduct a thorough investigation into the crash circumstances? That includes checking for road hazards, visibility issues, or contributing factors that may not be immediately obvious.
- Was the vehicle inspected for mechanical failures or defects? Problems like steering malfunctions, brake issues, or tire blowouts could explain a sudden loss of control.
- Was electronic data from the vehicle preserved and reviewed? Modern vehicles often contain black box-style data that can show speed, braking, and other critical information leading up to the crash.
If authorities can provide satisfactory answers, that’s a good sign they’ve been thorough. But if their answers come up short, that can be a sign that the crash needs another set of eyes looking things over.
Key Takeaway: Even when only one vehicle is involved, a detailed investigation is necessary to make sure the driver’s side of the story is told fairly.
