Harris County, TX — April 3, 2023, at least one person was killed as the result of an 18-wheeler accident which occurred along Kickapoo Road in the Waller area.
Officials said that the collision happened at around noon off the corner of Kickapoo Road and U.S. Highway 290. Right now, the cause of the crash remains unclear. Authorities said only that an 18-wheeler was stopped along Kickapoo when an SUV apparently crashed into the back of the trailer, wedging beneath. As a result of the collision, at least one person sustained fatal injuries. It’s unclear if anyone else was hurt.

Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
I certainly don’t know anything more about this awful event than what’s currently in the news, so I, like everyone else, will be waiting to hear what more authorities will have to say as their investigations continue. That said, there was one thing I did want to comment on which I saw in some comments sections on local media sites. A particular exchange that stood out to me was between people who were convinced this crash had to be due to distracted driving while another reader suggested this could be a situation involving the often overlooked issue of Anti-lock Braking System failure. Does that second person have a point here?
To be rather blunt, the people who say distracted driving is more likely are correct at a basic level. It is an incredibly common factor in crashes like this. But they seem to be automatically writing off this alternative explanation. It may be relatively uncommon, but it’s no less worth investigating than any other potential contributing factor. Anything from brake failure to a medical condition to worn tires to faulty lighting can lead to a deadly wreck like this.
At the end of the day, someone lost their life. Shouldn’t their loved ones know investigations were thorough, even if it only rules out something that wasn’t very likely to begin with? What about all the times throughout modern vehicle safety where something unusual like a manufacturing issue did contribute to a deadly wreck? Was it a waste of time for investigators to look into those factors—especially considering that these issues can continue to put lives at risk when left unaddressed?
One way or another, I certainly don’t know what happened here, and it’s unlikely those people arguing in the comments do, either. That’s why it’s best that everyone keeps an open mind and understands that the evidence needs to speak for itself if the victim’s loved ones are going to get the answers they deserve. How to get those answers is what’s going to be a challenge going forward.
