Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
One of my biggest concerns with single-vehicle wrecks like this is that authorities don’t always have the time or tools to look at anything beyond the most common possible causal factors. They can look at things like speed, cell phone records, alcohol, and medical records, for example, but departments rarely give officers the state-of-the-art tools and training needed to investigate more intricate and complex possible factors.
For instance, mechanical defects can cause what looks like erratic behavior. Medical emergencies may be sudden rather than the result of existing problems. Alcohol can involve local bars illegally over-serving someone and contributing to a crash. Road defects can easily be overlooked without extensive laser mapping and crash reconstruction.
Officers can be as skilled and thorough as possible, but if they don’t have the time, tools, or training needed, possible factors like those can easily slip through the cracks. That’s why more prudent departments and other professionals such as myself typically rely on independent, experienced professional accident reconstructionists.
