A common challenge I inform people about is in regards to situations like this where it seems obvious someone did something wrong. If it’s true a driver caused this crash by running a traffic light, then that is likely to result in some sort of criminal consequences. But that doesn’t always tell the whole story, and it doesn’t always get a family the answers or the closure they deserve.

That can require far more thorough investigations than what a typical police report can offer. Things like cellphone records, alcohol tests, road design issues, vehicle inspections, footage from nearby cameras, and other potentially important details tend to require more thorough independent investigations. Sometimes, that only confirms everything police already know. Other times, it secures new critical information that helps the victim’s loved ones ensure they’ll see a proper resolution to the situation.

So as open-and-shut as these details may seem, they might only be the beginning of the story.
