Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

A crash between a truck and a semi-truck on the highway raises several important questions, the most obvious being: What caused the initial collision? At this point, there’s no clear information about how or why the crash happened, but figuring that out requires more than just looking at the crash scene.

One key factor in highway crashes is speed. Was either vehicle traveling too fast for conditions? Engine control module (ECM) data from the semi-truck can provide insight into its speed and braking before impact. If the truck that struck the semi was also equipped with similar technology, that could help determine whether the driver tried to stop or if something else prevented them from doing so.

Another important question is visibility. This crash happened late at night so investigators should determine if the semi-truck was properly lit. If it was merging, changing lanes or slowing down, were its lights and signals functioning properly? It’s easy to assume a smaller vehicle is always at fault in a crash like this, but I’ve handled cases where a trucker’s poor visibility practices contributed just as much to a wreck as a driver’s actions.

Beyond that, investigators need to look at potential distractions or impairments. Was either driver distracted? Was fatigue a factor, especially for the trucker who may have been on a long-haul route? Phone records, dashcam footage and driver logs should all be examined to answer these questions.

At this stage, there’s no way to say what exactly led to this fatal crash, but if authorities don’t look beyond the wreckage and gather all available evidence, the full truth may never come to light.
