Generally speaking, I get a lot of calls from folks who feel that authorities did not give their situation the attention it deserved. This happens often, and that’s just when it comes to typical car wrecks. A multi-vehicle wreck involving a commercial vehicle is only going to raise more concerns. It can be helpful, then, for people to consider a few key questions and the sorts of answers they get from the police.

For example, did investigators have the time, tools, and training to properly analyze a complex crash like this? Multi-vehicle wrecks, especially those involving commercial trucks, require careful reconstruction to determine how each factor contributed to the accident. If officers were stretched thin or lacked proper equipment, there’s a real possibility that important details were overlooked.

Another critical question is whether vehicle defects were considered. Did investigators check for possible mechanical failures, such as brake issues, steering malfunctions, or tire blowouts? If any of the vehicles had faulty safety features, like airbags or seatbelts that didn’t function properly, that could have worsened the injuries. These factors are often ignored unless someone specifically pushes for a deeper look.

Lastly, have all possible sources of electronic data been secured? Commercial trucks typically have onboard systems tracking speed, braking, and driver actions. Passenger vehicles may have similar data available, along with GPS and cellphone records. Additionally, nearby businesses or traffic cameras may have captured video footage of the crash. If authorities don’t act quickly to secure this evidence, it could be lost or overwritten.

Sometimes, victims and families will find that authorities do a good job answering these questions. That’s usually a sign that authorities were thorough in their investigations. Other times, they find authorities aren’t addressing their concerns, and that can be the sign folks need to have independent investigators pick up the slack. At the end of the day, what matters is that people are confident that the answers they’re getting are telling the whole story.
