Brazoria County, TX — April 28, 2024, Coby Couthran was injured as the result of a motorcycle accident at around 6:00 p.m. along Highway 35.
Investigators said in preliminary statements that the crash happened in the area of Highway 35 and Munson Ranch Road, west of Angleton.
Initial details about the accident say that 32-year-old Coby Couthran was on a motorcycle going westbound along Highway 35. For reasons unclear, the motorcycle went off the left side of the road, hit the median, and crashed across oncoming lanes of travel. As a result, Couthran had injuries described as serious.

I would never speculate beyond these current initial statements, especially considering how authorities tend to only scratch the surface in their investigations. But some people are unwilling to believe a motorcyclist could crash for any reason that isn’t their own mistake. That can prove challenging for victims and families involved in accidents like this.
When a crash victim is in a car, people generally understand situations can be complex. There may have been an object in the road. The victim may have been over-served by a bar. There could have been a manufacturing defect with the vehicle. Perhaps the victim had a medical emergency. When the victim’s on a motorcycle, though, all that goes out the window. People immediately put all of the responsibility on the victim without even considering there may be extenuating circumstances to address.
This uncharitable bias would be less frustrating if it didn’t also negatively impact some investigations from the authorities. If an officer can’t put aside their bias and let the evidence speak for itself, or if they lack experience or proper equipment and have too much room for speculation, they can easily jump to conclusions and miss something important. I can’t say if that happened here, of course, but experience tells me to take any early crash summary like this one with a few grains of salt until more information becomes clear.
