Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

There’s no telling what exactly happened here until investigators can put together a more complete timeline of events. Hopefully when they do so questions about visibility, how fast the car was going, where the driver was and where he was headed, and many other important details will be included. At the very least the victim’s loved ones deserve to know all the facts, and those facts might even reveal something surprising. For example, if the striking driver was under the influence of alcohol then a local bar or restaurant might bear some legal responsibility for the accident. In those cases, such a business deserves a harsh lesson about obeying over-service laws.

To be clear, I’m not saying I know something police don’t. I read the same public information as everyone else. I just know that many accidents are more complicated than they seem at first, and this might be another of those situations. Only careful investigation could say, so I hope that’s exactly what authorities deliver. The people who lost someone important to them deserve no less.
