Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When a vehicle suddenly leaves the road and collides with something as unforgiving as a tree, the reasons aren’t always obvious at first glance. Determining why the driver lost control is the kind of question that demands more than a surface-level look.
1. Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash?
A proper review would go beyond noting the final resting place of the truck. Investigators should examine tire marks, vehicle damage patterns, and any signs of steering or braking before impact. Interviews with the surviving occupants could help piece together what happened in the seconds leading up to the loss of control. The experience level and resources of the investigating officers can make a big difference here.
2. Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash?
Mechanical issues like a steering failure, brake malfunction, or even a tire blowout could explain why the driver was unable to maintain control. A detailed mechanical inspection, including the Sierra’s suspension, tires, and braking systems, could confirm whether a defect or sudden failure played a role.
3. Has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected?
Modern pickups often have event data recorders that log speed, braking, and steering input before a collision. That information, along with any phone records or nearby surveillance footage, could clarify whether speed, distraction, or another factor was involved.
As with many serious accidents, the real answers come from a deliberate and thorough investigation that leaves no possible cause unexamined.
Takeaways:
- Crash scene analysis should capture all physical evidence before it’s disturbed.
- Mechanical inspections can rule in—or rule out—critical failures.
- Electronic data can offer an objective record of the truck’s final moments before impact.
