If officials are still gathering clues about happened here, it’s best not to jump to any conclusions from the sidelines. People may have guesses of their own based on the few early details, but only clear facts and evidence can tell the real story. In the decades I’ve been doing this, I’ve seen a lot of situations where the conclusion is nothing like the preliminary theories, and the best way to learn the true story is to ask questions. At least three come to mind:
- Will police do a thorough investigation? Ideally this would always be answered “yes,” but sadly that’s not the case. Police have limited time and resources to devote to traffic accidents, which sometimes means investigating officers reach a “good enough” conclusion and move on. I can’t tell you how many times we’ve been contacted and our investigators find things that a more comprehensive effort might have caught—which leads to our second question.
- Will anyone investigate product defects? People would be startled to find out how often a major vehicle malfunction caused a crash, or if not that then the gravity of a victim’s injuries. Seatbelts fail to lock, airbags don’t inflate or explode, tires separate, belts snap, brakes fail…the list goes on, and yet people rarely take the time to look more carefully and find those defective parts. A lot of people have been blamed for accidents they were helpless to stop, which investigators could have learned if they looked in the right places. Speaking of that…
- Will all electronic data be gathered? Like it or not, we live in a world where much of what we do is recorded in one fashion or another. Some of it is voluntary, like posting on social media; others happen behind the scenes, like a car’s Electronic Control Module (ECM) taking snapshots of speed and braking. Other times we’re recorded without realizing it by nearby business or home security cameras. All those sources of electronic data can be vital to a case, which means careful investigators will find them all.
The real point here is that most accidents are more complicated than they may seem at first. The above questions and the many others a prudent investigator will ask are all meant to answer a bigger, broader question: “What happened here?” I’m sure the accident victim’s loved ones want to know, so I hope investigators can deliver some real answers before all is said and done.
