Manchester, CT — February 10, 2024, Brenda Mendrell and Jermyra Cortes were killed and another was injured in a head-on truck accident at approximately 4:30 a.m. along Interstate Highway 84.
According to authorities, Brenda Mendrell and Jermyra Cortes—both age 44—were traveling in a westbound Audi in the outside eastbound lane of Interstate Highway in the vicinity of the Buckland Street overpass when the accident occurred.
Due to the wrong-way situation, the Audi was reportedly involved in a head-on collision with a Freightliner 18-wheeler which had been traveling eastbound in the same lane. The crash caused the Audi to be thrown into the center lane, resulting in a secondary crash with an International 18-wheeler.
Both Mendrell and Cortes incurred fatal injuries as a result of the wreck and were declared deceased at the scene. While the driver of the Freightliner was unhurt, the driver of the International apparently incurred minor injuries due to the crash and was transported to a local hospital by EMS in order to receive treatment.
