Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
I find that single-vehicle wrecks rarely get the attention they deserve, and unfortunately that seems to be especially true when it comes to truck drivers. As often as folks accuse me of being anti-trucker, I find that few in my profession ever talk about the unique challenges truckers can face in an accident like this. Even authorities can be quick to overlook certain possibilities.
Did the truck have mechanical issues? Was there something wrong with the cargo? Were tires defective? Did the driver work for a responsible company that made sure their drivers had time to rest, had appropriate training, and were in vehicles that were regularly maintained? Did the driver have any medical issues? Was the rollover particularly serious, or did a defect with the integrity of the driver’s cab cause it to collapse when it should have been able to protect the victim?
These are just some of the questions an experienced investigator seeks to answer. Maybe those answers are being sought behind the scenes, but it sadly wouldn’t be surprising if this event was yet another awful truck wreck that the public doesn’t seem to care about. I hope for the family’s sake that doesn’t turn out to be true.
