Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Following any serious accident, it’s worth considering whether authorities are going to dedicate the time and the resources it takes to full investigate a deadly crash. Even seemingly minor details can play a big role, so investigations need to be able to cover them.
For example, these reports mention an ejecting. Any crash involving an ejection needs to include inspections of the victim’s vehicle. Sometimes, that’s the natural result of the circumstances surrounding the crash. Other times, though, it can be a sign of a potential vehicle defect, such as a fault seatbelt. I can’t count how many times authorities saw these details and just overlooked them without a second thought.
Whatever ultimately happened, it’s up to the evidence to tell the story. If authorities make sure to gather as much evidence as possible, they can make sure that story comes to light. But if it seems their efforts are coming up short, that’s when there may need to be more thorough independent investigations.
