Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

It’s anyone’s guess right now what may have triggered this pileup. Some may have cynically jumped straight to driver mistakes like distraction or speeding, since many (but not all!) rear-end crashes start that way. Others may wonder if low visibility or bad road conditions played a part, while some may even consider less-common factors like vehicle malfunctions or defects. As always, it’s most prudent to withhold judgment until evidence, not speculation, tells the story.

One, several, all, or none of those may have played parts in what happened on I-35, and that is exactly why clear facts and careful investigation are so crucial. Every crash deserves thorough attention, but rarely is that more true than when lives are lost or changed by serious injuries. Those affected by what happened near Sycamore School Road deserve as clear a narrative as investigators can provide; if authorities plan to wrap things up once they have a “good enough” story, someone else may need to check again for anything that slipped through the cracks.
