Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

After any serious car accident, it’s important to know how to get clear answers so there’s no room for speculation. People want to be sure they can tell their side of the story, which is often why independent investigators come into the mix.

As much as people understandably want to trust authorities to get answers, not all investigations are equal. Sometimes, officers are stretched thin between their many responsibilities, so a crash investigation falls low on the list of priorities. On top of that, not all departments provide officers with proper tools to investigate delicate and complex details, like possible defects, road design issues, or debris patterns.

Independent investigations, on the other hand, have one priority: look at the facts. Accident reconstructionists with years of experience and state-of-the-art tools can work to gather as much evidence as possible so that those involved in the accident know their story is being told fairly.

It could be that authorities have taken steps to ensure that happens here, but that remains to be seen.
