Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

One of the challenges with any accident like this is that the victim isn’t around to give their side of the story. I’ve worked with countless families who were worried because it seemed like authorities either weren’t getting any clear answers or were saying things that just didn’t add up. That’s one of the reasons independent investigators are such a helpful tool after a single-vehicle accident.

Independent accident reconstructionists have a single priority: get evidence, and let the evidence speak for itself. That means answering all kinds of questions. Did a tire blow out? Were issues with the roadway? Did a medical emergency occur? Was the driver unlawfully over-served by a bar? Did a vehicle defect cause the car to lose control? Was there another reckless driver involved who fled the scene?

Likely or not, these things happen, so they deserve attention. Ultimately, investigations may simply rule out these possibilities. They could also confirm that authorities already looked into these things and told the family everything they know. That alone can be a significant step toward closure for a grieving family. However, independent investigations may also find evidence that authorities overlooked or ignored, helping to fill in the blanks and ensure the family is given the full story they deserve.

How those efforts might play out here isn’t for me to say. However, I’ve yet to work with a family who would have been satisfied just getting an easy or surface-level explanation. People want answers, and it’s important to consider every possible path to getting those answers.
