UPDATE (Feberuay 22, 2024): Authorities released more information about the accident, including charges against an alleged drunk driver. They identified the victim as 58-year-old Adam Attebury. Attebury was walking at the time when a vehicle struck and killed him. That driver was given a sobriety test, and authorities say the driver was arrested for intoxication manslaughter.

Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

Some folks may think that’s all there is to it, now that the alleged drunk driver faces charges. But in a lot of crashes allegedly involving alcohol, the drunk driver is just one party complicit in the accident. Investigations often show a local alcohol provider could be on the hook, as well.

Just half an hour after last call, drunk drivers are hitting the road after their night out trying to get home. A lot of those bars continue serve patrons up to closing time regardless of how obviously intoxicated they are. As a result, people get hurt, and police get involved. But as thorough as they can be seeing the drunk drivers held accountable for their actions, alcohol providers also complicit in the accident often get off scot-free. They then simply open up the next day and do it all over again until someone else gets hurt or they’re finally caught.

That’s why I have to wonder if authorities are really interested in getting the whole story here. Either they’re being thorough and looking into where the alleged drunk driver got their alcohol, or they’re risking a negligent alcohol provider continuing to put the community in danger.
