Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

One of the challenges with crashes like this is that the victims aren’t around to tell their side of the story. It might surprise people how heavily authorities rely on things like witness testimony and statements from drivers. So if they don’t have that, it’s up to a thorough accident reconstruction to gather evidence and piece together what led to the accident.

Unfortunately, not all departments prioritize that level of accident reconstruction, and authorities may simply move on and leave a victim’s loved ones empty handed. It’s one of the reasons I talk about independent investigations all the time. Their priority begins with getting as much clear evidence as possible. Even unlikely possible factors, like mechanical defects or road design flaws, get attention. That way, whatever ultimately let to the crash, there can be a clear answer for the family so they can finally get some much needed closure.

It’s possible authorities handling this accident have been more thorough than these initial statements suggest. However, it’s always disheartening to speak to families who trusted authorities do get them answers only to find themselves weeks or months down the line just as in the dark as the day the accident happened. I’d hate to learn this was yet another example of that.
