Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

One of the challenges with single-vehicle accidents is authorities are sometimes more likely to jump to conclusions than actually conduct careful, thorough investigations. This can result in important details slipping through the cracks if there aren’t safety nets in place to catch those details.

For example, recent years have seen an increased focus on rollover accidents and how well vehicles hold up during those rollovers. Technology is available to help ensure the structural integrity of vehicles meets a certain standard such that occupants have the best chance possible of avoiding serious injuries. Some manufacturers, however, neglect to make those improvements. That can result in crashes where occupants of a vehicle are far more severely injured than they should have been.

I’m not suggesting anything like that happened here. Instead, it’s sort of a canary in the coal mine—if authorities didn’t even bother investigating a potential vehicle defect, that could be a red flag that there are other important possible factors they’re overlooking, as well. Addressing these concerns can help victims and families decide if they feel comfortable relying on authorities to get answers after a crash or if they would feel better putting the investigations into the hands of independent professionals. Either way, the end result should be that they get clear answers to their questions.
