Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

Hearing that the car involved in this crash was occupied by juveniles raises some red flags for me. I’ve seen too many situations where people jump to conclusions simply due to a driver’s age. Even authorities may be too quick to speculate on what happened. This is one of the reasons it can be helpful to ask questions about the investigations themselves and see how authorities respond.

Did authorities look for video footage of the crash? Did they pull electronic data from the vehicles? Have they pulled cell phone records? Did they map out the scene and analyze the damage to the vehicles? Have they inspected either vehicle for defects? Were they able to get the victims’ statements, or were the victims taken to a hospital before authorities arrived?

Generally speaking, it authorities can provide satisfactory answers, that’s likely a sign they’re taking the investigations seriously. But if the answers aren’t adding up or if they fall short, that can be a sign that the crash may be better off in the hands of independent investigators who won’t jump to conclusions just because of a driver’s age.
