Accident Report

July 28, 2026, Willie Hopkins and one other were injured following a car accident at around 9:00 p.m. on US Highway 96.

According to initial statements from authorities, the crash happened at US Highway 96 and State Highway 103, about halfway between San Augustine and Pineland.

Authorities said that 48-year-old Willie Hopkins was in a Cadillac ATS traveling southbound along US 96. A Chevy Traverse was going northbound. The vehicles reportedly crashed, seriously injuring Willie Hopkins.

Reports say that the Chevy driver had moderate injuries. It’s unclear if anyone else was hurt. Right now, additional details remain unconfirmed.

How Did This Accident Occur?

At this location, it appears US 96 temporarily becomes a divided roadway. This raises concerns that someone may have been on the wrong side of the road. Frankly, the most common reason that happens is because someone was under the influence of alcohol. Not just that, but it usually means that person was unlawfully over-served by a local bar, which could mean that alcohol provider is responsible for contributing to the accident. Hopefully authorities are looking into that.

With that said, that is not the only possibility worth looking into. For example, medical conditions can lead to a wrong-way crash.
