Accident Report

August 26, 2026, one person was injured following an alleged intoxicated driver accident around 11:15 p.m. along Farm-to-Market 78.

Preliminary information about the accident says that the accident happened northeast of San Antonio, just south of Loop 1604.

It appears that a 46-year-old man was on a bicycle traveling along FM 78. While doing so, a vehicle reportedly hit the man, then fled the scene. Authorities reportedly located the vehicle later.

Due to the accident, the cyclist was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. The alleged hit-and-run driver was also accused of driving while intoxicated. Authorities recommended multiple charges, including intoxication assault with a vehicle causing serious bodily injury.

Investigations are ongoing.

How Did This Accident Occur?

If all of the details in the news about this accident are true, it’s a good example of why a driver being “intoxicated” may only tell part of the story. Here’s why.

Intoxication could refer either to drugs or alcohol. Legally, this is important. If drugs lead to a car accident, that doesn’t really change all that much about how investigations move forward. With alcohol, however, it raises questions about where that alcohol came from. In Texas, bars and other establishments are often responsible for contributing to drunk driving accidents because they unlawfully over-served the drunk driver. But if investigations begin and end at the crash site, those accomplices may fly under the radar.

So, do authorities believe alcohol led to this crash, or drugs? My concern is authorities sometimes just move on once they have someone facing charges. But if there’s more to the story, those affected by the crash deserve to know these other factors are getting the attention they need, as well.
