Accident Report

Terre Haute, IN — March 20, 2026, Cheryl Gaither, Robert Gaither and Dustin Mars were killed in an alleged road-rage accident on State Road 3.

Authorities said a Dodge pickup was trying to pass a Ford F-150 when both vehicles accelerated while going north in the southbound lane. Once the Dodge passed the other pickup, the Ford overcorrected as it returned to its lane and collided head-on with a Pontiac Firebird.

All three people involved in the collision — Cheryl Gaither, 72, and Robert Gaither, 80, in the Pontiac and Dustin Mars, 52, in the Ford — died from injuries suffered in the crash near West Durham Drive, according to authorities.

The Dodge driver, a 58-year-old Illinois man, subsequently was charged with reckless homicide, involuntary manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in the death of another person, authorities said. He was arrested August 7.

He told investigators that he should have slowed down when he got caught up in trying to pass the other pickup, but he did not see the accident, according to authorities.

Authorities have not released any additional information about the Vigo County crash at this time.

How Did This Accident Occur?

To get to the other driver involved in this accident, authorities seemingly had to investigate it pretty thoroughly, but that doesn’t mean they have answered every question about what happened on State Road 63.

Did they consider the possibility that a mechanical issue contributed to this crash? That can be overlooked if investigators focus too much on the human conflict at the heart of such incidents.

I hope investigators have been able to address any lingering questions the grieving families have about this crash.
