How Did This Accident Occur?

Single-car accidents that happen in the middle of the night like this one did are often dismissed by the general public as having been caused by driver error without much real consideration. Personally, though, I’m not so eager to settle on that conclusion without more information. Why? Because I have been in this line of work for over three decades. In that time, I have seen plenty of similar cases in which thorough investigation managed to uncover evidence of less likely causes. Sometimes things don’t end up having been how they initially appeared on the surface.

I’m not trying to insinuate that I have more details about this accident than are already publicly available, by the way. As far as I know, driver error—whether it was a result of distraction, fatigue, impairment, or something else entirely— remains on the table as a possible cause. However, what if the Odyssey’s lane deviation was a result of something gone wrong with the vehicle itself? Could it have been dealing with steering mechanism issues, for example? Or perhaps it had a tire blowout? Just because these kinds of things are unlikely does not mean it should automatically be ruled out.

An in-depth vehicle inspection would be able to shed light on any underlying mechanical malfunctions or product defects that might otherwise have gone unnoticed. Hopefully investigators—whether the authorities or a third party—get one done. That way all the bases are covered and nothing will inadvertently be allowed to slip through the cracks. After all, the people affected by this accident deserve more than vague assumptions based on surface-level investigation.
