Accident Report

May 16, 2026, Mark Gomez and another person were injured in a pedestrian-involved car accident shortly before 12:45 a.m. on I-5E.

According to authorities, 25-year-old Mark Gomez was on foot outside of his Honda Civic on I-35 at Comal Street when the accident took place. Officials indicate that, for reasons yet to be confirmed, the Civic was rear-ended by a southbound Ford Mustang occupied by a 23-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman. Gomez was also hit over the course of the accident, according to reports.

The pedestrian reportedly sustained serious injuries as a result of the wreck. The woman who had been a passenger in the Mustang suffered minor injuries, as well, according to reports. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.

How Did This Accident Occur?

When it comes to pedestrian-involved car accidents, some people are hyper-focused on the location of the accident. It’s true, freeways are not designed for safe pedestrian travel. But, in this case, the pedestrian was outside of his vehicle for unknown reasons. Had he been recently involved in a single-vehicle collision? Was he just trying to reach the relative safety of the shoulder? Unfortunately, reports about the exact circumstances remain vague.

I’ve been in this line of business for over three decades, though. I would hope that investigators are remaining thorough and openminded as they look into whether or not the collision itself was avoidable. Was human error—things like distraction, fatigue, or impairment—a factor on the part of the Mustang’s driver? Or maybe there was something wrong with the Mustang itself—steering issues or brake problems, for example—that made chances of avoiding the collision less likely?

Hopefully investigators—whether the authorities or a third party—put in the time and effort necessary to get to the bottom of it. After all, the people affected by this accident deserve real answers backed by solid evidence. The vague assumptions that often result from surface-level investigation just won’t cut it.
