How Did This Accident Occur?

It’s easy to assume driver error or distraction caused this crash, but I’ve been part of enough accident investigations over the past 30-plus years to know that assumptions are not the proper basis for any reasonable conclusions. Facts are the best way to sort out what happened on Cheaney Road.

Did another vehicle force the Chrysler off the road? Was there an object in the road? Did the van have a problem with its brakes or steering mechanism? Answering these questions will help investigators figure out this crash.

Authorities likely will reconstruct this accident by poring over physical evidence, witness statements, data from the Chrysler and any available video footage. Cell phone data could show what the driver was doing at the time of the accident, but an outside expert may be needed if authorities suspect a mechanical issue contributed to the crash. In my experience, most law enforcement agencies don’t have the time or training to do the kind of forensic examination needed.

Such an investigation should make it clear how this accident unfolded.
