How Did This Accident Occur?

People likely assume a one-car crash like this was caused by a distracted or fatigued driver, but more than 30 years of being involved in accident investigations has taught me there is no such thing as a good assumption. There is no replacement for evidence-based facts in an accident investigation.

Authorities must gather evidence from the scene, witness statements, data from the Acura’s engine control module and any available traffic or dashcam footage to piece together how this accident happened.

Did the driver have a medical issue that contributed to the crash? Did another vehicle cause the Acura to swerve unexpectedly? Did the SUV have a problem with its brakes or steering mechanism? I don’t pretend to know the answer to these questions right now, but hopefully investigators will unearth evidence that can provide some clarity for the injured driver and her family.
