Accident Report

March 28, 2026, one person was injured following a semi-truck versus pedestrian accident around 4:28 a.m. along I-70.

According to initial details released by Kansas Highway Patrol officials, the incident happened along westbound lanes of the interstate near Milford Lake Road.

Authorities said that a 20-year-old Topeka man was in a vehicle on the right shoulder of the interstate. Reports say the man got out of the vehicle and “walked into the lanes of travel,” following which a semi-truck hit the man.

Due to the collision, the man was seriously injured. Additional details about the accident are still under investigation at this time.

How Did This Accident Occur?

Authorities seem to paint a clear picture that the pedestrian here “walked into the lane of travel.” However, it’s important to keep in mind that preliminary reports rarely tell the whole story. These don’t say if the man was trying to cross the road, if he was trying to flag down a vehicle, if there was some kind of emergency going on, etc.

Also, with serious injuries, it’s not even apparent how exactly authorities came to the conclusion they did. I’ve seen too many serious accidents where authorities based their whole report on a cursory glance at the accident scene. If they haven’t spoken to the pedestrian yet, for example, they may only be getting one side of the story. Hopefully efforts continue to gather clear evidence, and hopefully people reading about the accident reserve their judgments until all the facts have been considered.
