Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

A serious, chaotic crash like this is sure to bring up all kinds of speculation and assumptions. The key is knowing how well authorities are tuning out the noise and focusing on the facts. I find asking a few key questions early on can help determine this.

  1. Do officers have the time, tools, and training they need to consider complex crash scenes?
  2. Have the vehicles been inspected for potential defects (brakes, steering, electronics, airbags, seatbelts, etc.)?
  3. Has all electronic data been secured from cell phones, the vehicles, cameras, GPS, etc.?

In my experience, when authorities have good responses to these questions—responses that clear up doubts and concerns—it’s a sign the investigations are being taken seriously. But when the answers come up short or things aren’t adding up, that can be a family’s sign to bring in another set of eyes to help ensure nothing important slips through the cracks.
