Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When a motorcyclist ends up in the path of multiple vehicles, there are more questions than answers—questions that can’t be resolved with assumptions or quick judgments. These types of crashes demand a level of investigation that accounts for every possible factor, not just the obvious ones.
Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash?
Crashes involving several vehicles, especially on a busy interstate, require detailed scene analysis. Investigators should have mapped the full chain of impacts, identified each vehicle’s movement before and after the collision, and determined whether the motorcyclist was already down before being struck. Without a layered reconstruction and experienced personnel reviewing the scene, it’s easy for early conclusions to overlook critical steps in the sequence.
Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash?
The cause of a motorcyclist going down on a highway isn’t always visible. If the bike suffered a tire failure, brake issue, or sensor malfunction, that might explain why control was lost before any other vehicle got involved. A mechanical inspection of the motorcycle and any vehicles that made contact is essential to confirm whether equipment failure contributed to the event.
Has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected?
Even if several vehicles were involved, the electronic data from each one could help clarify timing, speed, and response. Some motorcycles now store basic telemetry, and nearby vehicles may have recorded forward-facing footage or crash data that shows exactly when and how the rider entered their path. GPS, dash cams, and phone records can all help answer whether the motorcyclist was already down, slowing, or trying to evade impact before being hit. If that data isn’t secured early, opportunities for clear answers diminish quickly.
Complex crashes don’t unravel themselves. They require thorough, focused attention to reveal what really happened and why each vehicle played the role it did.
Key Takeaways:
- A multi-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle needs a full reconstruction to establish sequence and cause.
- Mechanical failure on the motorcycle should be investigated as a possible contributing factor.
- Data from nearby vehicles, GPS, and phones may provide clarity on what led to the collision.
