Houston, TX — March 4, 2024, Maria Francisca Cardenas and Martin Gonzalez Cuellar were injured due to an alleged DWI driver accident at around 2:30 p.m. on Airport Boulevard.
According to initial statements from authorities, the incident took place at the intersection of Airport Boulevard and Riceville School Road.

It appears that 65-year-old Maria Francisca Cardenas and 62-year-old Martin Gonzalez Cuellar were in a Pontiac Vibe going southbound along Riceville School Road. At Airport, a westbound Chevy Traverse reportedly ran the light and crashed into the Pontiac. As a result, both Cardenas and Gonzalez Cuellar had injuries described as serious.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Authorities alleged that the Chevy driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash and was recommended to face DWI charges. Authorities did not say if they were investigating the possibility the alleged drunk driver was over-served by a local alcohol provider. That may not sound too likely at 2:30 p.m., but it doesn’t have to be nighttime for alcohol providers to break the law.
Our firm has handled hundreds of personal injury cases against law-breaking alcohol providers who contributed to a serious crash. Plenty of those cases involved businesses breaking the law during daylight hours. Lunch and brunch spots, afternoon happy hours, grocery stores, gas stations, liquor stores—bars are generally the worst offenders, but they’re far from the only ones.
My concern, though, is that authorities too often fail to investigate negligent alcohol providers even during peak drunk driving hours. Hopefully this being a daytime crash doesn’t raise the chances of someone being let off the hook for their role in a serious accident.
