Arlington, TX — March 9, 2024, Benito Gamez was injured following an alleged drunk driver accident at around 5:00 a.m. along East Pioneer Parkway.

According to officials, the accident took place in the area of Pioneer Parkway and Southridge Drive. It appears that 54-year-old Benito Gamez was in a Ford F-150 going westbound on Pioneer. Up ahead, authorities said Toyota Tundra was going the wrong-way, and it crashed head-on with Gamez’s Ford. A westbound Chevy Tahoe then hit Gamez from behind.

Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

If the allegations here are true, charges certainly seem warranted. But frankly, it takes a lot more than that to address the root issues that lead to wrong-way drivers. The fact of the matter is almost every single wrong way crash involves not just an intoxicated driver but rather drivers who were recklessly and illegally over-served by a bar. Here’s why that matters.

Our firm has dealt with hundreds of personal injury cases against those sorts of establishments, so I’ve seen first hand how those negligent alcohol providers rarely make a single, isolated mistake. More often, they continuously violate all kinds of laws and regulations and put others in danger. But once they actually face charges, fines, license suspensions, or liability for their actions, they clean up their act quick. In other words, it’s math: the fewer alcohol providers out there illegally over-serving people, the fewer drivers will get on the wrong side of the road.

I certainly can’t say what did or didn’t happen here, and authorities may have more information than they shared publicly. Whatever the situation is, I’ll sum things up in simple terms. If authorities looked at this crash, filed charges against a single alleged drunk driver, and moved on without further investigations, there’s a good chance they’re treating a symptom and not the disease.
