Accident Report
Minneapolis, MN — September 29, 2026, Shiya Sargent and two other people were killed and four others were injured in a truck accident at about 4:15 a.m. on SE 4th Street.
Authorities said a car collided with a southbound semi-truck that was crossing 4th Street after exiting Interstate 35W near the University of Minnesota. The crash forced the car to become stuck under the truck’s trailer.
Three people in the car, including 19-year-old passenger Shiya Talise Sargent, were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, while four others were hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, according to authorities. All of them ranged in age from 15 to 19.
The truck driver was not hurt, authorities said.
Authorities have not released any additional information about the Hennepin County crash at this time. The accident is still under investigation.
How Did This Accident Occur?
At this point, we don’t know which one of these vehicles had the right of way. Did the truck pull in front of the car, or did the car crash into the truck?
Authorities should be able to sort that out quickly, but that still leaves the question of why this crash happened. Maybe one driver was distracted or fatigued. Maybe the traffic signal was malfunctioning. Maybe one vehicle had a problem with its brakes or steering mechanism. A full investigation should short out what caused this accident.
Investigators will rely on vehicle data, physical evidence, witness statements and available video footage to reconstruct this crash, while cell phone records could show what each driver was doing at the time.
Trucking company records will show if the driver was vetted and trained properly and whether the truck was overdue for any scheduled maintenance or repairs.
This investigation should answer any lingering questions the grieving families have about this accident, or they may choose to have an independent investigator look at the evidence.
