Speak With Grossman Law Offices if You've Been Injured in an Accident With a Watkins 18-Wheeler Truck

Recently, you or a loved one might have been involved in an 18-wheeler accident, suffering injury or death as a result. You might be looking for answers, trying to make sense of why this happened, but after filing a personal injury or wrongful death claim, the question quickly changes from why something happened to who or what is at fault. The answer to this question is oftentimes quite simple: the trucking company in charge of the person driving the truck holds liability.

What is Watkins Refrigerated?

Watkins Motor Lines, Inc. was founded in 1937 by Bill Watkins, and in 1972 obtained the right to be considered a less-than-truckload (LTL) carrier, meaning that its vehicles tend to transport cargo that does not fill up the entire trailer. This in turn meant that much of Watkins' business would deal with agreements with smaller customers (i.e. individuals instead of large companies). In 2006, FedEx, which was looking to strengthen its own LTL operations, purchased Watkins Motor Lines, renaming it FedEx Freight.

Also in 2006, Sunco Carriers, Inc., which had been purchased by Watkins in 1997, was re-branded as Watkins Refrigerated. Watkins now operates in the eastern half of the United States exclusively in the refrigerated truckload service.

Watkins Refrigerated operates more than 360 trucks and employs as many drivers. In the past two years, they've been involved in 29 accidents. While none of those were considered fatal, people were injured in ten of them. Nineteen accidents required that a vehicle be towed from the scene. Of 498 driver inspections performed, 40 of those resulted in a driver being taken out of service. And of 221 vehicle inspections performed, 38 of those resulted in a vehicle being taken out of service.

Why You Need Help to Hold Watkins Refrigerated Accountable

While Watkins is a relatively small company, you shouldn't make any false assumptions about how easy dealing with them will be if you've been involved in an accident with one of their vehicles. Department of Transportation records show that Watkins carries $750,000 worth of insurance on their trucks, which is the smallest amount mandated by federal law. If the company is doing only the bare minimum to clear that bar, you have to wonder how important making things right with those involved in accidents actually is to them.

In addition to this, Watkins was established in 1937. They have a long history, and in that time they've had plenty of experience dealing with all manner of accident cases. They'll fight you with everything they've got, so you're going to need someone on your side who's equipped to fight back.
