A crash early Wednesday morning in south Phoenix left one driver seriously injured. Police reported that the collision occurred around 4:50 a.m. at 19th Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road. Authorities said an SUV allegedly collided with a semi-truck that was hauling concrete bridge sections. The SUV became lodged under one of the truck’s massive pillars, leaving it heavily damaged. The driver was transported to the hospital with broken legs. The investigation into the cause is ongoing.

Semis of any kind present a serious hazard on the road. However, those carrying oversized loads are an even greater risk.

Could Driver Fatigue or Distraction Be a Factor?

The crash happened before sunrise, a time when drivers are often still shaking off fatigue. Investigators will likely want to know whether either driver had been on the road for long hours or was distracted in the moments before the crash. Reviewing work logs, rest periods, and mobile device records could provide valuable insight into whether a lapse in attention or alertness contributed to the collision.

Could Vehicle or Load Issues Have Contributed?

When a semi-truck is hauling an oversized or heavy load like concrete bridge sections, even a minor issue with braking, steering, or load balance can create major hazards. Investigators should examine the semi’s mechanical condition, including its braking system and steering controls. They may also review whether the load was properly secured and balanced. If anything about the truck or its cargo limited the driver’s ability to react in time, that could have played a role in the outcome.

Evidence Investigators Should Collect

To understand what caused the SUV to end up underneath the semi-truck’s load, investigators will want to review data from the truck’s Engine Control Module (ECM), which can show speed, braking, and throttle input. Skid marks, debris patterns, and the vehicles’ final resting positions will help reconstruct the sequence of events. Any nearby surveillance or traffic cameras could provide a clearer picture of how both vehicles approached the intersection.

Why a Full Investigation Is Necessary

This crash involves serious injuries and a commercial truck hauling a heavy, oversized load. Determining whether fatigue, distraction, mechanical defects, or load securement issues played a role will be key. A thorough investigation is the only way to explain how this collision happened and establish accountability for those involved.
