How Did This Accident Occur?

A lot of people will jump to immediate conclusions when they see a motorcyclist involved in a crash. There’s a common assumption that all motorcyclists are reckless drivers. However, I know from experience that many are safe drivers who fall victim to factors outside their control. For all anyone knows, this crash involved road hazards, a tire blowout, or even some other reckless driver who left the scene. Only the evidence can say for sure.

The concern is if authorities are focused on gathering that evidence. Unfortunately, officers can also share in the negative bias against motorcyclists. I’ve had cases where that actually led to serious mistakes which had to be corrected by thorough independent investigations. That’s why it’s important for families to follow up with authorities as soon as possible. If authorities can assure a family that they’ve set aside their bias and are focusing on the facts, that can be very comforting. But if it seems authorities are treating the accident as a low priority, that may be a sign that the crash would be better off in the hands of independent, unbiased professionals.
