Accident Report
Archer County, TX — June 1, 2026, Vicki Windham was killed and another person was injured in a truck accident at about 6:30 p.m. on U.S. Highway 281.
Authorities said a northbound semi-truck collided with a 2024 Chevrolet Trax that was going west on F.M. 1954. Both vehicles ended up in the ditch on the west side of the highway, while the truck’s trailer detached and swung into the southbound lanes, where it was hit by a 2020 Honda CR-V and a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox.
Trax driver Vicki Elaine Windham, 79, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash south of Wichita Falls, according to authorities.
The truck driver was hospitalized with serious injuries, while the Honda driver suffered minor injuries, authorities said. The Equinox driver declined medical attention.
Authorities have not released any additional information about the Archer County crash at this time.
How Did This Accident Occur?
It is not clear at this point which vehicle had the right of way at this Archer County intersection, or why one of them failed to yield the right of way. Was the traffic signal operating properly? Was one driver distracted, perhaps by a cell phone? Did one vehicle have an issue with its brakes? These are the type of questions that investigators must consider as they work to reconstruct this accident.
Investigators likely will rely on physical evidence, witness statements, data from the vehicles and any available video footage. Cell phone records could show what each driver was doing at the time of the crash, but an outside expert likely will be needed for a forensic examination of the vehicles if authorities suspect a mechanical problem contributed to this accident.
Most law enforcement agencies do not have the time or training for such inspections, in my experience, but it could be vital to provide the Trax driver’s family with a clear picture of what happened on U.S. 281.
