3 Injured in Truck Accident on I-68 in Monongalia County, WV

Monongalia County, WV — October 24, 2023, 3 people were injured in a multi-vehicle truck accident in the afternoon along Interstate 68.

According to reports, a truck was hauling gravel in the westbound lanes of I-68 near the exit for Cheat Lake when the accident occurred.

For unknown reasons, the truck overturned after striking the center median, spilling gravel across both the eastbound and westbound lanes of the interstate. The gravel reportedly struck two vehicles which were traveling in the eastbound lanes. This incident caused a significant traffic jam in both directions.

After only a very short time, a semi-truck traveling in the westbound lanes, for reasons which are unknown, collided with the traffic caused by the original incident. It reportedly struck a van and then an SUV, before continuing on and colliding with three additional tractor-trailers before coming to a stop. The three passengers in the SUV were trapped, having been pinned against the median.

Upon arrival of Emergency Medical Services, the three entrapped victims were extricated from the SUV before being taken to a local hospital for treatment of the injuries sustained as a result of the accident. The incident is still under investigation; no additional details are available at this time.
