Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
One of the main concerns I hear from folks involved in a single-vehicle wreck is they’re worried authorities won’t tell their side of the story fairly. That’s a perfectly reasonable concern. In fact, I’ve had many cases where a closer secondary investigation showed authorities either jumped to conclusions or failed to consider all possible contributing factors in their investigations. Why does that happen?
The reality is that not all departments prioritize accident reconstruction. That often means single-vehicle wrecks fall pretty low on their list of things to divert time, effort, and resources to. So, if people want to be sure their situation is being taken seriously, they sometimes need to follow up with the authorities early on. If it seems authorities are being thorough and can address all concerns and questions, it’s a good sign they’re doing proper investigations. If their responses come up short, though, there may need to be independent investigations to pick up the slack and keep the facts straight.
