How Did This Accident Occur?
With so few confirmed details available right now, it wouldn’t be responsible to jump to conclusions. That said, it’s often important to know exactly how authorities went about getting their information. Sometimes, an investigation into the investigation itself can show cracks in the foundation. Let me explain what I mean by this.
I have crashes like this one come across my desk often. Two vehicles collide, one driver dies, and the family is left with unanswered questions. Sometimes, authorities will do a thorough accident reconstruction. They’ll look at road conditions, inspect the vehicles for defects, do blood tests, look for independent witnesses, secure phone records and any possible video evidence, etc. That’s generally a good sign authorities are taking the investigations seriously and focusing on getting the victim’s loved ones the answers they deserve.
Too often, however, I’ve had cases where authorities merely glances at the crash scene and spoke with the sole survivor—the other driver involved in the crash. With the victim not around to tell their side of the story, this can lead to an incomplete and biased view of what happened. For a family in need of answers, that’s not really going to do any good. Regardless, authorities sometimes will simply leave it at that and move on.
That’s why it can be crucial for a victim’s loved ones to follow up with authorities and trust their instincts. If authorities can provide clear answers and address concerns thoroughly, then that can be very reassuring. But if details aren’t adding up or questions remain unanswered, there may need to be a secondary independent investigation to make sure nothing important slipped through the cracks.
