Authorities said that the woman was in a car going northbound along the highway. A semi-truck was going southbound. Reports claim that the truck failed to yield making a left turn, and the two vehicles collided.
Due to the crash, the woman reportedly sustained serious injuries. There did not appear to be any other injuries. Authorities have yet to release additional details about the accident.
How Did This Accident Occur?
Authorities say they believe that the truck involved here failed to yield making a turn. But that doesn’t really answer the question. Yielding to oncoming traffic is just about the most basic thing a driver can do. A supposedly trained professional failing to do this means something went wrong. What investigators need to find out is that was just an isolated mistake or if there are more serious, persistent issues that made this crash inevitable.
Let me give you an example of what I mean. I handled this crash a while back where a truck driver crashed after being behind the wheel for over 20 hours straight. That alone was proof the driver did something wrong, but we wanted to know why he did something so dangerous. Through further investigations, we learned that the trucking company routinely pressured drivers to meet unreasonable deadlines. If truck drivers didn’t cut corners and break the rules to meet these deadlines, they risked losing their jobs. So, it was inevitable one of the truck drivers would eventually make a mistake trying to meet these expectations.
Just to be clear, I’m not saying that happened here. But if the investigations into that situation began and ended at the crash scene, a whole company’s reckless business practices would have gone unchecked. That would mean the behavior would have continued until more people got hurt. That’s why it’s important to investigate crashes like this thoroughly. Is it possible the truck driver involved here just had a momentary lapse in attention? Of course. Is it also possible their alleged mistake was just a symptom of a bigger problem? Absolutely. It’s up to the evidence to say one way or the other, and it’s up to the victims and families to make sure there are professionals working to get that evidence.
