How Did This Accident Occur?
If someone fails to control the speed of their vehicle, it’s usually a sign that they were on their phone or going too fast. That may sound open-and-shut, but I’ve always talked about the importance of having evidence to tell a story. That’s why it’s worth highlighting how challenging it can be to preserve electronic evidence.
Simply put, there is a lot of electronic data that needs to be secured following a serious car accident. Cellphone records can show texts, calls, and even GPS data. Vehicle engine control modules may show speeds, braking, and steering in the moments prior to the crash. Dash cams and even cameras at nearby businesses or homes may show the crash. This all may be time-sensitive, and it often requires court orders to obtain. If authorities lack the equipment or motivation to secure that evidence, it may be lost.
That’s why it sometimes takes thorough independent investigations to handle crashes which might otherwise seem open-and-shut. Just because the cause may seem straightforward doesn’t mean getting the evidence to prove those events is simple. It remains to be seen, then, what steps authorities have taken here to gather and preserve evidence.
